#BARRY - TV Review by Stevie Mack

#BARRY - TV Review by Stevie Mack

Barry is the newest installment to my favorite Sunday night HBO lineups.

Synopsis: A disillusioned former Marine-turned-assassin reluctantly accepts a job in Los Angeles, where he inadvertently discovers an interest in the performing arts.

I'm so used to seeing Bill Hader being funny on SNL it's hard to wrap my mind around him being a killer, but in the first episode of Barry....I'm sold!

The show gets off to a slow start, which is expected, they have to make us care about the character and they did a fine job of that. I'm in there rooting for him to win from the moment he heads out to do his hit man thing. But the plot twist comes fast an unexpected, so now I'm rooting for him to break free to be himself, whoever that turns out to be.

Looking forward to the next installment of this new gem.

Killer Mike NRA

If you don't know who Killer Mike is and why people are talking about his interview on NRA TV .... you are in the right place because I'm going to post here a few things to bring you up to speed.

Killer Mike - here's what Wikipedia has:

Michael Render (born April 20, 1975), better known by his stage name Killer Mike, is an American rapper, actor, and activist. He is the founder of Grind Time Official Records, which he launched through the SMC and Fontana Distribution. Mike made his debut on "Snappin' and Trappin'" from OutKast's 2000 LP Stankonia, and later appeared on the Grammy-winning song "The Whole World", a single from Outkast's greatest hits album Big Boi and Dre Present...Outkast. He has since released five full-length albums as a solo artist.
In December 2008, Mike confirmed he signed to fellow Atlanta-based rapper T.I.'s Grand Hustle Records. In 2012, he released R.A.P. Music, produced entirely by American rapper/producer El-P. Killer Mike and El-P subsequently formed a duo in 2013, branding themselves Run the Jewels; the duo was signed to Fool's Gold Records and released their self-titled debut in June of that year.
Killer Mike is also known as a social and political activist, focusing on subjects including social inequalitypolice brutality, and systemic racism. In addition to addressing themes of racism and police brutality in his music, he has also delivered several lectures at colleges and universities, written about social justice topics for publications such as Billboard, and been the subject of televised and published interviews regarding police misconduct and race relations. He was a visible and vocal supporter of Bernie Sanders during his 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, and refused to support Hillary Clinton after Sanders left the race.
Killer Mike has been featured in the films 20 FuneralsIdlewild, and ATL.

Now that you know who Killer Mike is, a person who speaks on Black empowerment, you will see why so many conscious people have a problem with him taking a stance via NRA TV. Here's what some said on Twitter:

Tariq Nasheed @tariqnasheed
"I love Killer Mike.Thats my brother. He made some excellent points about Black gun ownership. The problem is, he is talking about it on the NRA platform & the NRA could give LESS THAN A DAMN about protecting Black people's 2nd Amendment rights. Ask the family of Philando Castille"

Britini Danielle @BritnDWrites
"So Killer Mike encourages Black folk to Bank Black (awesome!), but then allows himself to be used by the NRA, an organization that has NOT spoken up for Black gun owners (i.e. Philando Castile)."

M'BaCoup @GramsciAF
"So what Killer Mike was saying on NRATV is not really the problem, it’s just the fact that he’s saying it on NRA TV; a racist dogwhistling organization that upholds whote supremacy and doesn’t look out for people of color who own guns. He kinda let the NRA use him as a token."

Kind2Know1 @conscious_sis

"Killer Mike is out here cooning for the NRA... folks never learn 😒 "

Chuck D @MrChiuckD

"Guns are necessary definitely if you in the Yukon wilderness sniffing between Bears like Karl Malone . Its unfortunate the NRA got this brother looking like NWA without explaining how the USA Gun has peed bullets into creating a wilderness of our communities. The Amerikkkan Pet"
