The Education of Charlie Banks - Movie Review by: Stevie Mack

The squirm fest begins on screen and in the audience when class and past collide in a clash of envy, angst and hormone driven decisions on an ivy league college campus.

The Education of Charlie Banks is a 2007 American independent film directed by Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst and starring Jesse EisenbergJason RitterEva Amurri, and Chris Marquette. It had its world premiere at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival, where it won the Made in NY Narrative Award given to the best narrative film made in New York.

The story moves slow but the drama is sure and the lessons to be learned are apparent. This is one of those stories where you want the under dog to stand up and fight for what he believes in while at the same time you want to see him bond with the protagonist and grow to be either just a tough or at least not be the run-of-the-mill push over.

When I read reviews by critics I can't help but wonder if the old adage is true; critics are just frustrated filmmakers who pick apart everyone else's' work. That''s why I always say, don't listen to them, go see a movie for yourself and draw your own conclusions. After I watch the Hangover 2,  I will write a review on that as well, in spite of what my friend said the critics said about it.

Thor - Movie Review by Stevie Mack

Just saw the movie Thor at the Rave Cinema in Westchester. Didn’t see it in 3D and didn’t have to. This movie offered all the bang for my buck in regular D, or 2 D. It had all the villains and science fiction special fx along with a good plot.  The cast was packed with good actors and the cg was typical for a big Hollywood Sci-fi, but giving in to the willful suspension of disbelief is easy because you want to be carried away by the fantasy of this comic book come to life.

It’s always funny to see what will take our hero over the edge, what are the fighting words that will get him so riled up that he will battle to the death? Watch the movie and come back and tell me what those words were. I’m sure that If you watch the movie after having read this review you will chuckle when the moment of truth  occurs.

Chris Hemsworth did an excellent job as the lead, he was funny, romantic and inviting. He carried his role well and was a larger than life image on the screen, which is definitely needed when portraying Thor, the God of Thunder. Always a pleasure to see Sir Anthony Hopkins  get a good role in anything these days, we just love him and don’t want Hannibal the cannibal to be the only epithet defining his career.

I was really glad to see Idris Elba  play a major role as Heimdall, the gate keeper to the bridge of Asgard. Being a Black man myself, I am always looking to see if there’s any Brothas in the flick. I guess every American minority race does that, we gotta’ see if we are represented in the movie, and of so, is it  a good part? And in this case It is.

Stan Lee has his usual and often looked for cameo; bravo to Stan Lee! It’s amazing how all his work has found a new life in the blockbuster movie franchise and merchandising realm. This new round of success is breathing new life into his characters and introducing them to people the world over who may have never picked up a comic book.

There are tons of moments in the movie where you get to laugh, guffaw, and cheer, rooting for the heroes and and against the villains. If you’re a big sci-fi/comic book fan like me you are sure to enjoy this movie and all the trailers that precede it. Thanks to a heads up from my friend Apollonia Kotero, no she’s not in this movie, she starred in Purple Rain  with Prince, but she posted on Facebook to stay until all the credits were fished, because there’s something waiting for you there too, don’t leave until you see that!

I’m very happy to be a part of revitalizing the village after so many years. This is where I got my start in comedy and this is where so much Black culture is home grown and exported.

Entertainment and Dining Returns to Maverick’s Flat

Maverick’s Flat on Crenshaw Blvd was thee spot for urban comedy back in the 90’s. It was one of the first places I got to perform in front a real urban audience. Def Jam Comedy recruiter would scout talent there and hold auditions and the show back then was produced by Rico a hot DJ at KJLH Radio station, one of the most popular stations here in Los Angeles, CA.

Built in 1966 by John Daniels, Maverick's Flat hosted many groups including the Temptations who named their first album Psychedelic Shack in honor of Maverick's Flat where they often played in the sixties Back in the 60’s and 70’s it was thee ultimate destination for anybody who was somebody! Isaac Hayes, Richard Pryor, The Dramatics, Chaka Khan and more! They all played at Maverick’s Flat and everybody clamored to get in to be on the scene.

For a decade the building went dark. It stood there on Crenshaw like a broken down dancer, a reminder of what used to be hot.

Now, it has been renovated by the new owner Curtis Fralin, a friend of John Daniels who has restored the downstairs music club and added a fine dining room and cigar lounge upstairs. The new look and feel rivals any place I’ve been to in Beverly Hills, Hollywood or the Marina!

Comedy is back at Maverick’s Flat as well! Kevin Williams of Un-Cut Entertainment has been producing the shows on Tuesday night and the stars have been coming out to get their laugh and mingle on!

I was a featured comic there this week and had the crowd in stitches! It’s always a pleasure to perform in front of an audience who has been pampered by great staff and seated in classy, pleasant surroundings. The show this week was hosted by the hilarious Luenell and Co-Hosted by the ever funny Skillz Hudson. The normal host, Melanie Comarcho is currently on tour with Martin Lawrence and will return after making all that money from all that funny.

You gotta' get down to Maverick’s Flat and support the venue, eat that delicious food as well as get a bar of the best entertainment in the world! The comedy show may move to Wednesday nights, however, there’s jazz, R&B, Funk and fine dining as well.

SMN - StevieMack@Night EXCLUSIVE Report

SMN - StevieMack@Night EXCLUSIVE Report

Republican Marilyn Davenport sends out an email depicting president Obama's parents as monkeys and President Obama as a baby monkey.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA - Civil rights activists are calling on Marilyn Davenport, a tea party activist and elected member of the central committee of the Republican Party of Orange County to step down! She said she will not heed calls to resign to step down after she sent an email with a picture depicting President Barack Obama as a chimpanzee.

The California NAACP through its president, Alice Huffman, issued a statement Sunday saying the cartoon is "racist, outrageous and disrespectful."

"There are no ifs, ands, or buts about this cartoon, it is absolutely and positively racist in nature," the statement said. "There is no way that depicting the President of the United States as less than human can be considered anything but a racist act. History has shown that Blacks have been depicted in this fashion in the past to degrade African Americans as not human. Anyone who does not know this history is either ignorant, had their head buried in the sand; or as we at the NAACP believe - Simply Racist."

Michael Cera and Jesse Eisenberg: Same Different People

How is it that Michael Cera and Jesse Eisenberg are so much alike, not only in the looks department but in the acting department as well. At first I thought I was tripping, and then I began to wonder, hey is that guy in the Social Network the same guy from  Super Bad?

And then I went online and googled their names together, like, “Michael Cera and Jesse Eisenberg…”, I did this after I watched the Academy Awards and saw Jesse Eiseneberg in the running for the Best Actor Oscar. When I googled them the funniest thing happened, there were other queries for the exact same thing! So, I wasn’t the only one wondering if they were the same person. Hey, there were pictures posted and everything, comparing them to each other, and some even had the two of them in the same poses and dressed alike (that’s the one I borrowed for this blog).

But upon closer inspection of the pictures, I began to see the differences in their features; Michael Cera has more of the Vulcan type features, and Jesse Eisenberg looks more like a Cardassian, complete with the square forehead and all, sans the ripples and wrinkles. Actually, if you look at Jesse Eisenberg long enough he will begin remind you of a younger Howard Stern, not he Howard we know today, but the Howard Stern from the bio-pic Private Parts.

I recently watched a movie titled, Adventureland but I may as well have  been watching Juno. I say this because although Michael Cera and Jesse Eisenberg’s features are slightly different, their acting style is the same. Even though Jesse Eisenberg goes on long dialogue riffs in his monologues, they still have that distinct, innocent-but-hip vibe in their presentation. They, like Vince Vaughn, are always themselves when acting. No, I’m not comparing them to Vince Vaughn, I mean, hey I could have very well have used Woody Allen as an example in this analogy, or Gary Busey for that matter, the point being, certain actors, no matter what the role, they are always themselves.

Michael Cera and Jesse Eisenberg are not the same person, but they are more alike than different. Thus, the title of this blog; they are the same different people.

Movie Review by Stevie Mack: “Black Swan"

The Black Swan was well worth the watch. This is one of those movies like Shutter Island, where you never know if the lead character is just tripping or is this really something going on in real time. We get to see the behind the scenes of a ballet tour and what lurks behind the glittery curtain, all is revealed, character defects, jealousy and premeditated failure.

The cinematography and costumes are on point and the directing superb. If you like movies such as "A Chorus Line”, then you’re gonna’ love Black Swan.

Movie Review by Stevie Mack: "127 Hours"

I watched this movie with the toughest crowd ever and it was still a great movie! My dad had already seen it, so he wanted to narrate the whole film at every turn, and now that his hearing is fading, we have to pause to repeat what was said and then explain the context of that statement before we can can proceed on to the next sentence.

Also present was that friend, you know the one, they seem to always laugh really loud at all the inappropriate moments. With a crowd like this it's hard to give in to the willful suspension of disbelief and just get completely lost in the cinematic art before you, but this movie was so captivating on so many levels it's hard, even for a rowdy crowd, to mess it up.

The acting was superb and the flashbacks, montages and photo stills helped to establish more than just a revelation of the character, it also served as a chronological back story and a geiger counter as to the ever changing mental state of our hero/protagonist, indicating and hinting at what he must do to live another day and/or escape his situation.

Tis movie is well worth the watch and I can see why our lead character is a contender for an Oscar.

Chocolate Chip Dancers win big on VH1 Dance Cam Slam

Chocolate Chip Dancers have won the $5000 grand prize on the premier episode of Dance Cam Slam on VH1 - Tuesday Oct. 26th 10pm and they will return each week to defend their title and a chance to win another $5000…every week! They plan to donate a portion of their winnings to charity.

Chocolate Chip Dancers, Stevie Mack, Keith Lewis and Kabin Thomas formed on the set of a reality show in 2009. The footage shot that night never saw the light of day, but these three Buddha bellied, bow tied, brown skinned brothers saw the potential of a funny, uninhibited, portly dance trio.

They shot and posted a video on YouTube of them dancing in sync to Beyonce's "Single Ladies". This video went viral and spurred another; them dancing to Bobby Brown's "Every Little Step I Take", which not only went viral, but also inspired Wayne Brady, Bobby Brown and Mike Tyson to do their comical video of the same song.

They auditioned for many shows and commercials, got booted off the CMT/MTV show "Your Chance to Dance" under the claim they didn't fit the demographics, yet two white men went on to win the $10,000. prize on the show using the very same song, dance steps and costumes.

Un-thwarted by this slight, the Chocolate Chip Dancers soon after auditioned for Dance Cam Slam on VH1 and went on to win the grand prize. They are now in pre-production of  a TV pilot, the subject of a potential super bowl commercial and touring live shows to deliver their brand of humor in motion to the eager masses.

Takers - Movie Review by Stevie Mack

Takers was worth every penny and be sure to see it at the theater on the big screen, bootlegs won't do this movie justice..LOL….but true. Sure there are moments when you go, okay that wouldn't happen, but then all the action and great story arch makes you give in to the willful suspension of disbelief anyway and go with it for what it is; an awesome fictional tale that has you rooting for the "good bad guys"!

TI played his part well as the heavy who has a lot to be angry about, and you can't tell if he's been wronged or is up to no good. The Chris Brown foot chase is the best I've seen since the foot chase in Point Break, it's actually better…and I love Point Break, but this is one you just have to see!

I felt that Matt Dillion was mis-cast as the lead detective on the case, he would've been better as a second banana to Steve Harris or they could've cast Terrence Howard…now that would've been perfect! Just my opinion, based on Matt Dillion's past characters and screen presence; he plays a better under dog. He would've worked better as a member of the crew as opposed to a cop. I guess I've been spoiled with the likes of Will Smith in "I Robot" and Al Pacino in "Heat".

Michael Ealy, Paul Walker and Idris Elba came off as classical gangsters in every sense of the word, harkens back to the days of Humphrey Bogart films, smooth, balanced and sharp dressers. The rest of the cast was well rounded out and made this a good movie, well worth the watch.
